What it does
memgit is a version-controlled memory store for AI assistants that persists context across sessions and between different AI tools. It uses git-like operations (commit, diff, rollback) to manage searchable memories, reducing token usage by loading only relevant context instead of everything stored.
- Switch between Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT mid-project while maintaining the same learned context and project rules.
- Seed a new project with context by running `memgit onboard` to extract repository structure and history into the memory store.
- Share learned patterns and conventions across a team by pushing the memory store to GitHub and cloning it into teammates' AI tool configs.
Tools this server exposes
| Tool | Does |
|---|---|
| memgit_recall | Searches the memory store using BM25 and returns top-k relevant memories ranked by project context. |
| memgit_commit | Saves new or updated memories to the store with a message and timestamp. |
| memgit_diff | Shows differences between memory states across sessions or checkpoints. |
| memgit_rollback | Reverts memories to a previous checkpoint by commit hash or relative reference. |
| memgit_log | Displays the commit history of the memory store or individual memories. |
| memgit_stats | Reports token usage, memory counts by category, and context footprint comparisons. |
| memgit_onboard | Seeds the memory store from an existing repository by analyzing git history, manifests, and documentation. |
| memgit_squash | Compacts the memory store by combining old commits while keeping recent history. |
Before you enable it
An MCP server runs with whatever access you give it. Start with a development account rather than production, and check which tools the server exposes before you let an agent call them unattended.
