What it does

Blackout is an MCP server (and CLI) for permanently redacting sensitive text from PDF files entirely on the local machine. It detects SSNs, emails, phone numbers, and card numbers, then exports a rasterized PDF where the original text layer is discarded. Intended for developers and agents that need verified, non-reversible PDF redaction without uploading files.

  • Automatically redact detected PII categories (SSN, email, phone, card numbers) from a PDF and receive a verified clean file.
  • Check whether a PDF still contains extractable text after redaction to confirm the operation succeeded.
  • Integrate PDF redaction into an AI agent workflow so that 'redact this PDF' resolves to a tool that removes text rather than covering it with a rectangle.

Tools this server exposes

ToolDoes
redact_pdfRedacts specified content from a PDF by rasterizing pages and discarding the text layer, then verifies the output contains no extractable text before returning.
check_pdfRe-extracts text from a PDF file to verify that no text layer remains after redaction.

Before you enable it

An MCP server runs with whatever access you give it. Start with a development account rather than production, and check which tools the server exposes before you let an agent call them unattended.
