What it does

mentu-navigator is a read-only repository navigation MCP server that uses BM25 lexical retrieval to return ranked file-and-line ranges in response to natural language questions about a codebase. It is aimed at coding agents that need to orient in an unfamiliar repository without loading the entire codebase into context, and at developers reviewing agent activity. It never writes to the repositories it reads.

  • Ask a question like 'where is retry handled?' and receive ranked file-and-line snippets with retriever attribution to locate relevant code without reading the whole repository.
  • Use progressive disclosure: call locate to get candidate ranges, then read-range to retrieve bounded heading-scoped slices with frontmatter separated from body content.

Tools this server exposes

ToolDoes
navigatorAuto-routing entrypoint that dispatches a natural language question to the appropriate sub-capability and returns compact results.
locateReturns BM25-ranked file-and-line ranges for a query, with retriever attribution and optional demotion file support.
read_rangeFetches a heading-bounded line slice from a file, with frontmatter returned in a separate field.
navigator_mapReturns an overview of the repository: files, languages, contracts, manifests, typed docs, and Git state.
navigator_queryRuns the deterministic exact-match query pipeline and returns ranked path, line, and snippet hits.
navigator_handlesReturns frontmatter pointers, typed relationships, and diagnostics for docs-as-code networks; all pointers require hydration.
navigator_symbol_contextReturns definitions, references, tests, docs, and config surrounding a named symbol.
navigator_change_impactGiven a Git range, returns affected tickets, contracts, tests, and risk signals.

Before you enable it

An MCP server runs with whatever access you give it. Start with a development account rather than production, and check which tools the server exposes before you let an agent call them unattended.
